Winter 2014: Young Voices
Compost
Poetry by Sophia Mautz
White hands feather-heavy and scratching for black soil unearthed egg shells Our feet trample among strawberry blooms as we reach the sparse few red roses A sweeping film of dirt settling around us daddy and his tired daughter trimming away the overgrowth to rebuild steady new greens Blue fingernails with dirt underneath chopping up thin ginger Daddy cooks soup while I watch and remember the backyard touched by our unsure hands leaving behind a freckled legacy Breathing lilacs we share a celebratory meal and know we have reached the earth
