For a Hot Shot

My words can’t carry you
out of the smoke, the smoke
that took your lungs.
My words won’t beat back the flames.
I can’t remember when last
I provided anything
but fuel.

The heat is exhausting,
kindled by exhaust. A warning
in warming,
high in the wild blue
where maybe you
reside tonight
while your lady rains hot tears
on your black boots.

When will I stop trying
to revive you with wind, with prayer?

All stories are pulp.

All trees are fuel.
