Summer 2014: Young Voices
A Work of Art
Poetry by Leilani Garcia
There’s a girl I know. Never was a girl so pretty. A crown of flowers perched atop a mesh of auburn waves and easy curls, She walks like a goddess with the mouth of a sailor. She’s my national anthem; A melody as sweet as cinnamon that I can’t shake from my mind. She’s electric: A live wire dancing and sparking on wet pavement, dangerous and alive. With an American flag draped over tanned shoulders, And red Converse laced loosely on her feet, She was destined to live fast and be wild; She was born to die. She’s endless miles of open road, An uncaged bird singing on the summer breeze. I am not this girl, Though I wish I were.
