Summer 2014: Poetry
From the yes column of “is there a god?” checklist
by Jennifer Foreman
Watermelon smells like laughter infused with relief. Dripping from the chins of sun browned babies having their first taste. Mamas’ removing seeds and placing tiny pieces of truth and first kisses in the open mouths of their own hearts. This is the beginning and the end. Sucking the juice out. Tongues pressing first bites into the roofs of new palates. Thirst quenched and now hungry for more. Summer days too thick to swim through. Feet sticking to kitchen floors. The promise of everything beyond the back porch. Tomorrow writes the story of the mango.
