Winter 2013: Poetry
Fishtail
by Margaret Chula
A murder of crows – harbingers with hacking throats taunts my silence, prying open eyes still dreaming my favorite dream – the one of flying with Mother on broomsticks our hair swirling and knotting in the wind and – what the hell, we don’t care we’re above it all – dropping white powder on our enemies dusting the crops of dullards & drunkards & men who have poisoned our hearts. We are the sirens of morning the restless windmills at noon devious daughters skulking at dusk our laughter so loud that even the ravens retreat to the crotches of pines. Here we are again – Mother and I flying faster and faster fluttering our fishtail feet pummeling the outstretched hands that try to drag us down from our matriarchal glory.
