Winter 2015: Poetry
Under the sign of the water bearer
by Jennifer Kemnitz
And so the poles melted, engulfing all. Water enfolded the low places, caressing At first, cajoling, then push, shove, displace, Like a large aunt when you don't take her hint, Then she hip-bumps you over on the couch. She gets what is hers, at last, as is right. All in the way was inundated, absorbed Into the great body of the ocean: Her swells, her squalls and her gentle, sparkling calms. Those living waters fed on the dead. There were delicate things seen no more And sturdy ones that cracked, split wide open. All that she found she welcomed, she accepted; All yielded under her steady persuasion. The anger, guilt, sadness she washed over; She had only joy to move and to spread, Anointing the world's tired, dusty feet, Diluting poisons, baptizing anew.
