In the Modern World

I heard today that this is the modern world, 
but the world has always been modern, each era 
hotly driving away from the past, and in the passing 
growing old, while the present continues on, modern 
and unsurprised. The moment of turning must be 
a subtle, still place – slow, as if right on the head 
of the pivot of time, hardly moving to the eye, 
as once, content not to stir, I sat on the front step 
and watched my children run through the yard, 
feeling just then a slip, an almost undetectable release
of forward motion. I think I grew older, old-fashioned,
and the peace of it was slow honey on my tongue.
