Winter 2015: Poetry
Advice
by Donna Prinzmetal
You can stop trying to be perfect right now, today, before nightfall even. Stand in the dizzying twilight and count waves instead each in-breath each exhale. There are things in this life you will not do: fly, be a professional ballerina, learn Chinese or soprano sax. It’s okay. Open the hatch of your life and climb into the unspoiled dark. Wade in the thick marshes, a turtle without a shell. Collect agates. Be a pick-pocket of your own dark past. Try and find the right shade of yellow in the harvest moon. Listen for owls. Watch the crazy dance of bats. Here we are, each of us staggering through doorways into other doorways. Why are you always saying you’re not ready? None of us are ever ready. Forgive yourself. This will need to be done more than once every single day.
