Winter 2016: Poetry

Matched Set

I've had these breasts
for a century's shiny quarter, nursed two babies
with them, pleasured myself and delighted
many men, plus some women, too, so what
does it matter if the tech clicks
and mutters, waving her ultrasound wand?
I'll lie here still, a clock stuck
at half past noon, right arm up
and left arm down. Nothing to do
but count one-two, one-two,
paring those syllables down
to their essence, until they're perfectly
round, rounded up, even.

What if there's a bomb ticking
in my chest? I think
about buying myself a bowstring
and moving to the Amazon
or maybe starting up a collection
of unlikely pairs:
albumen and bitumen
in identical glass jars;
pillowcases and slipcovers;
a dry spot on the wet street
in the shape of a man, and a man
shaking raindrops from his umbrella
at the door of a donut shop.

One thing at a time, I tell myself,
onethingatatime.
One thing.
Time.
