Winter 2016: Poetry
Lesson
by Stacey Vallas
I was so new to the world you could hold me in one hand, cup my belly, while your other arm sliced the dark saltwater, showed me how to stay afloat, to travel. I can still feel the tiny pleats of my blue bathing suit-- a thousand little wings—little open pages--- I’d run my hand over them in the sun, gazing. I can feel how I felt in your hand. Held up beneath the sky in the brine, depth and lap, spray sharp in my breath I taste the ocean, taste fear, bright excitement, My legs bat against the great water. The joy I’ve felt in the sea since then, limbs unspooling, buoyed up and up, began with your hand holding me and your voice saying kick and your voice saying love, love mine go
