Summer 2013: Poetry

Suspended

When you first see the photo, you think
this elephant must be drowning,
the foreshortened torso surrounded
by all that azure water, even the massive
head with its two unpoached tusks
and one visible open eye, but then you notice
the upraised snorkel trunk, the white
bubbles up top, and you realize
he’s got his own air hose, not
drowning at all, just swimming, so you can

relax and imagine the currents rippling
his fan-shaped ears, his colossal
legs paddling blue wherever
he wants to go, his playful tonnage
held up by water, while his elephant brain
remembers, of course, the place he will wade out

dripping and refreshed,
able to throw his weight around
the way land animals do
after having been adrift: the astronaut
after her weightless voyage, the dreamer
after his night of dreams.
