I Swapped a '74 Mustang for This

I rev the engine of the men I knew back then,
            a distant cruise around a town square in Missouri,
            where youth and recklessness once thrived.

Time dubs over the bare places young hands roamed
            as I lament the end of the road up ahead,
            clutching the wheel of time at a sharp curve.

The foolish rides I took sometimes roar over the exhaust of age.
            They spark when my tank’s half empty,
            and I’m broken down again.

Cassettes, brown tape, distort with time in glove boxes of memories.
            The ghosts are streetlights and people,
            too much beer, Calvin Kleins and the pill.

At sundown, the cheap thrills resurface,
            forgotten songs unwind from an old radio wave inside my head,
            to sustain me a year or two longer.
